CrossFit Suspends Swim Events at Licensed Competitions Until Further Notice

In a recent communication addressed to the organizers of CrossFit Licensed events, CrossFit has officially prohibited the inclusion of swim events in their competitions. The email, which was sent to all relevant parties, explicitly states, “Effective immediately, no open water or pool swimming events are allowed until further notice.” This directive applies to all upcoming CrossFit Licensed events, signaling a temporary but strict limitation on the programming of any swimming activities, whether they take place in open water or within pool facilities. Organizers are expected to comply with this new guideline until further instructions are provided.

This directive follows the tragic incident involving Lazar Djukic, who drowned during the Lake Day event at the 2024 CrossFit Games. In light of this heartbreaking event, CrossFit has implemented this precautionary measure, suspending all swim-related activities in CrossFit Licensed events until further notice. The decision underscores the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all athletes and participants, as they reassess the protocols and risks associated with water-based events.

What is a CrossFit Licensed Event?

A CrossFit Licensed Event is an official designation granted by CrossFit, recognizing and approving competitions that take place outside the regular CrossFit Games season. This designation ensures that these events meet specific standards set by CrossFit, providing an official stamp of approval. To qualify for this licensing, event organizers are required to hold a CrossFit Level 1 certificate, demonstrating their foundational knowledge of CrossFit principles. Additionally, they must either own a CrossFit affiliate or be sponsored by one, ensuring that the competition is closely tied to the CrossFit community. This licensing process helps maintain consistency, quality, and safety across all CrossFit Licensed Events, ensuring they align with the core values and standards of the broader CrossFit organization.

Upon approval, event organizers are required to pay a $1,000 licensing fee to secure their competition’s official CrossFit Licensed Event status. Beyond the financial commitment, organizers must also provide proof of insurance, ensuring that the event is covered for any potential liabilities. Furthermore, to uphold the integrity and safety of the competition, all participants are required to sign a waiver, acknowledging the risks involved. In addition, every judge involved in the event must complete the online CrossFit Judges Course, ensuring they are fully trained and equipped to uphold the standards of CrossFit during the competition. These requirements are designed to maintain the high standards expected of CrossFit Licensed Events, ensuring a safe and fair environment for all involved.

CrossFit Licensed competitions are then listed on the ‘Competitions’ page of the CrossFit Games website.
