As an older member, I find CrossFit empowering. It shatters the myth that aging means weakness. Here, I am strong.”- Sally
Three years ago, at the age of 67, when most of my peers were slowing down, I embarked on an unexpected adventure: CrossFit. What started as a tentative step towards staying fit in my golden years has turned into a full-blown obsession. Here’s why.
I stumbled upon CrossFit quite by chance. My doctor had just advised me to incorporate more exercise into my routine to combat the onset of age-related health issues. I tried walking, swimming, even yoga, but nothing stuck. Then, a friend introduced me to CrossFit. I was skeptical at first – the high-intensity, dynamic workouts seemed daunting. But I decided to give it a try.
The Early Challenges:
The initial weeks were tough. I struggled to keep up with others in my class, often feeling out of place among the younger crowd. But the coaches at my CrossFit gym were incredibly supportive. They modified exercises to suit my abilities, and their encouragement was infectious. Gradually, I found myself looking forward to each session.
The changes were both physical and mental. Physically, I became stronger and more flexible, and my endurance improved remarkably. But the mental transformation was even more significant. CrossFit taught me to push my limits to embrace discomfort for growth. It wasn’t just about lifting weights or doing pull-ups; it was about cultivating a mindset of resilience and determination. It’s the exhilaration of pushing past my limits, the joy of surprising myself with what my body can still achieve. Each session is a challenge, a battle against my own doubts, and a victory, no matter how small. CrossFit has given me a strength I never knew I had, both physically and mentally.
“It keeps me youthful. Working out with people of all ages, challenging my body and mind, I feel years younger.” -Dana
Community and Camaraderie:
One of the best parts of CrossFit is the community. I was welcomed with open arms. The camaraderie in the gym is palpable. We cheer each other on, celebrate each other’s victories, and support through the challenges. This sense of belonging and collective striving has been incredibly motivating.
Why I’m Obsessed:
So why am I obsessed with CrossFit? It’s simple: CrossFit has given me a new lease on life. At 70, I’m in the best shape of my life, both physically and mentally. It has shattered my preconceived notions of what it means to be ‘old’. I’ve discovered a newfound sense of confidence and a zest for life that I hadn’t felt in years. The joy of surprising myself with what my body can still achieve is very rewarding. At an age where society expects you to slow down, CrossFit has taught me to live life at full throttle. It’s empowering to defy the stereotypes of aging, to be stronger, fitter, and more alive than ever.
My journey with CrossFit is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to start. It’s not about being the strongest or the fastest; it’s about being a better version of yourself. At 70, I am living proof that age is just a number when it comes to embracing a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.
This is why CrossFit isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a lifeline, a source of endless energy, and a constant reminder that age is merely a number.
To anyone considering CrossFit, especially those in their later years, I say go for it. It might just be the best decision you ever make. For me, it certainly was. CrossFit isn’t just a workout routine; it’s a way of life
